The eyes in this piece represent awareness which remains after the 3rd state of being the one we know as death. This conscious awareness then manifests it self back into physical form in its next incarnation.
As the root mantra unfolds, it describes something that does remain in our universe it is not affected by the laws of impermanence & change like everything around us is. That something is consciousness, spirit, prana or chi and it permeates all realities at all levels including inanimate objects and that something is also inside us.
Consciousness has remained unchanged since the beginning and resides within the body and is what drives the body. In order to experience this reality around us. That includes the changing body itself. So really the body is just a tool or vehicle that the consciousness uses in order experience the changing reality that we find ourselves in.
