About Sofia Crespo
Sofia Crespo, an Argentine visual artist currently based in Lisbon, Portugal, is recognized for her pioneering integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in digital art. She works in collaboration with Norwegian artist Feileacan Kirkbride McCormick as part of the artistic duo Entangled Others, where their practice explores the intersection of technology and biology, challenging the traditional dichotomy between the artificial and
the organic.
Her artistic inquiry explores the potential of neural networks to simulate and evolve organic forms, positioning machine learning as an extension of human creativity rather than a technological anomaly. Crespo’s projects, including Neural Zoo (2018–2020) and Artificial Natural History (2020–2023), investigate speculative ecosystems and synthetic life forms, offering a reimagined landscape where nature and computation converge. These works invite audiences to reconsider the boundaries that define the artificial and the natural, emphasizing their interconnectedness.
Crespo’s work has been exhibited globally in leading institutions such as Kunstverein Hannover (Germany), Fotomuseum Winterthur (Switzerland), and the Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A) in London, as well as in public spaces like Times Square (New York City). In 2022, Entangled Others' piece Swim was acquired by the Buffalo AKG Art Museum for its permanent collection. Most recently, in 2024, Crespo was commissioned by Casa Batlló in Barcelona to create Structures of Being, a facade mapping inspired by Antoni Gaudí’s organic architectural vision, which positions nature as an evolutionary continuum of endless creative potential.
In addition to her artistic practice, Crespo has contributed to academic discourse, lecturing at institutions such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Oxford Artificial Intelligence Society, where she reflects on the evolving role of artists in the age of machine learning. In 2021, Entangled Others won the RE:HUMANISM award for Beneath the Neural Waves 2.0, and Crespo was honored with the AI Newcomer Award by the German Informatics Society.
