"Visually and thematically, this piece is an abstract self portrait, nothing more and nothing less. It is a digital collage of five different hand-selected generative outputs from three different generative algorithms, all made by me. Usually my work involves creating algorithms that then are left to their own devices to draw the final pieces.  However in this work, I shifted the balance between human craft and automation very slightly more towards the former by using digital manipulation and digital painting on the outputs.

This shift has led me to contemplate: from where exactly has my shyness to admit that my human hand has (digitally) touched the piece come… as if the human touch might corrupt the purity of the generative artwork? (Is it still generative art and am I still a generative artist?) At the same time, how is it that when describing my AI Self-Portrait, I felt the need to justify the human touch, and with this piece I feel the exact opposite?  Is generative art as a medium of automation actually opposite to AI in that it is automation as craft whereas AI art is automation of craft? Does any of this matter?

Perhaps this piece could be said to be a portrait of my identity as an artist: a lot of automation, a lot of intention, color, texture, wobbly form, and a heck of a lot of questions"

About Melissa Wiederrecht

Melissa Wiederrecht uses code as medium to survey various paradoxes: order and chaos, intention and accident, light and darkness, and control and randomness. Inspired by pioneers in the field of generative art, alongside Western and Islamic art history, Wiederrecht harnesses modern technology and tools like Javascript and GLSL fragment shaders, and the blockchain, to create artworks that explore ancient themes and cultural concepts.

Born in Iowa, Wiederrecht studied Computer Science and Mathematics at the University of Wyoming, and is based in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

The artist has released digital artworks on the blockchain since 2022, including: Sudfah, Art Blocks Curated (2022); Cosmic Rays, Verse (2023); Undercurrents, Bright Moments (2023); Take Wing, fxhash (2022); and Zbageti, fxhash (2022). Wiederrecht’s work has been shown worldwide, including: N=12, Feral File (2023); Tandem, Galerie Data, Paris (2023); Generative, FakeWhale Cross (2023); Liminal Space, Unit London, London (2023); Odysseys, Verse (2023); FEMGEN, Right Click Save x Vertical Crypto Art (2022); In Touch, VerticalCrypto Art, Berlin (2022); Arithmetic Phenomena, Verse (2022); and Coded Elegance, 1stDibs (2022).
