About The Artwork
"The work has universal clarity; everything is in its right place. The green figures are complete forms, delineated from the background. They have free-flowing, colorful interiors that one might read as creativity or happiness. There is direct interaction and subsequent peace echoed by the use of secondary colors, which by their very nature are harmonious unions. The piece is joyous and calm, but retains an element of active participation in the tactile connection being forged." - Siobhan Hebron

'A Substance Called Understanding' is about love and looking deeply into the soul of another person and being able to see and be with all the different parts of them. The title comes from a quote by Thich Nhat Hanh: "Love is made of a substance called 'understanding,' and understanding is the outcome of your looking deeply.” The Augmented Reality features animation, sound and interactivity as the viewer taps on the figures protruding out of the bodies to invoke “kissing” animation and the release of thousands of hearts. You can also interact with spirals in the head to hear the audio (left head: standard audio, right head: custom audio). To stop the audio tap the protruding figures once again. Tap and hold the protruding kissing figures to have them rise up and float out of the frame.
