Drawing particularly from anime’s Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura which had female protagonists and the Gameboy’s Pokemon Crystal which allowed users to select a female character for the first time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe work explores the hyper-resonance of this imagery, considering how it struck a chord for the artist as depictions of Asiatic femininity which were largely absent from her lived environment. Considering the artist’s experience growing up mixed race (Chinese\/British) in the 90s seeking out images of Asian identity via popular media and how the undeniably alluring yet heavily mediated imagery of 90s anime shaped her ideas of self, beauty and cultural identity. Incantation co-opts the lotus flower as a commodified symbol of ‘Asian-ness’ and infuses it with the Asiatic body to create a hybridised form. Here the work explores being caught between worlds, a state that extends as much to our existence as mediators between physical and virtual realms as it does to the experience of growing up between cultures. The work interrogates how spiritual and ancient beliefs can coexist with technology, infusing lore with videogame aesthetics and mixing modern and mythological stories. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe work is set within a 3D digital environment, navigable by the viewer via a video game controller. The virtual space is centred around a large murky pond, cast in a gloomy low light and overgrown with plants. The world is filled with the subtle sounds of nature, which croak, squelch, and shimmer with a soft and creepy-crawly, ASMR-like quality.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eFrom the heart of the pond emerges a sprite-like female form, who is part plant, part human. Her green tinged body is encrusted with pond weed and in her mouth is glossy pink lotus flower. This augmented, hybrid creature takes influence from various Chinese deities and demons including one the eight immortals, He Xiangu and water spirits, Shuimu, as well as modern ‘myths’ like The Grudge’s \u003cem\u003eSaeki Kayako\u003c\/em\u003e. As a character she represents the power and agency of darker depictions of Asiatic femininity, subverting the softer, submissive stereotypes. Her hybridity calls to the feeling of being in-between, to the sense of being othered and to the artist’s experience of being mixed race. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eShe performs a sequence of choreography, recorded via motion capture, and manipulated to realise other-worldly movements that go beyond the limitations of physical performance. Growing up half Chinese and half British in the UK, she encountered anime as an accessible point of entry for the affirmation of her Asian heritage, which often felt like a secondary or underlying element of her identity. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eDrawing from the magical girl alter-ego of Sailor Moon and the transformational powers of Pokémon evolutions the works seek to assert the magical potential of being in between, acting as triggers for transformation. They similarly reference videogames of the same era, as outlets for manifesting and exploring new identities, and for the creation of alternate versions the self. In this way the works seek to embody conduits for change. Like Sailor Moon’s Cosmic Crescent Wand or Pokémon evolution stones, they are talismans, amulets and charms - and like videogame cartridges and disks they represent portals into new worlds. They are precious and potent objects loaded with magical potential.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAesthetically the works at once emulate gemstones, selected for their symbolic spiritual properties, and the transparent plastic of 90s tech including game controllers, Apple macs and Gameboy cartridges. This deliberate dissonance between manufactured and magical seeks to reconcile the artist’s own questions of authenticity and her ongoing inquiry into her identity.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe works also feature eyes as a recurring motif, as both the fundamental portal into the self and as iconic emblems of the anime aesthetic, they manifest in the haphazard style of absent-minded doodles, sketched out whilst daydreaming.
