This led us to some essential questions: who would these avatars represent? What should their environment look like? What kind of conversations should they have?

As I pondered these questions, the concept of "Conflicts" started to take shape—a simulation of past relationships played out through battling NPCs. This artwork is incredibly personal - more so than any project I've ever undertaken.

However, beyond my personal reflections, the artwork explores the capacity for AI to realize and personify real world identities in an increasingly tracked and digitized world. It further asks whether simulated agents could ever aid in therapeutic intervention through generative role playing.

The making of a digital twin:

Over the past 6+ months, after the initial idea of "Conflicts" came to be, my team and I have developed a custom pipeline for the creation of life-like AI NPC characters, based off of real-life personalities. Here's how it works:

"Conflicts" utilizes a bespoke conversational pipeline that allows two large language models to interact with one another inside of Unreal Engine. The “backend” of this system pulls information from a Google Form which either character in the simulation has previously filled in.

This form data indicates various character traits and information about the person as well as their opinions and views on the other person. Then, data is connected to a custom-made Metahuman avatar in Unreal Engine. Everything about the character is then generated based on the language output of the large language model (similar to how ChatGPT generates responses).

By having two NPCs communicate with each other, they enter a feedback loop of neverending conversation where they are faced with their conflicts in a perpetual dialog of attempting resolution.

NPC to NPC Conversations:

After developing the tools to give the avatars an AI generated, custom personality, the next step was to get the NPC's to talk to each other.

Utilizing The Garden in the Machine's custom Unreal plugin, we were able to have the NPC's converse with each other entirely autonomously. This let us use the character form data to guide their personalities while leveraging additional prompting for particular topics to consider or even specific situations to negotiate. However, once we hit "play," the avatars are talking (or arguing) entirely on their own.

Eventually, we even developed custom voices to match the participants, sometimes exactly through voice-trained AI models (as is the case in the final version of my avatar).
